Review of The Unloved (2009) by Andy W — 21 Jul 2010
Based on Samantha Morton's personal experiences within the child care home system, its a sensitive look from a child's perspective at adults in positions of care, be it her abusive dad, emotionally fragile mum or the assortment of faces in the care system.
Its not as bleak as you'd expect; if anything it portrays the care system as lonely and isolating (as opposed to the usual violent arenas so often portrayed in drama). Its brilliantly shot with assured direction, but is a little thin on character and background information on certain characters.
Its insightful, but could have gone further with the detail on life in the system.
