Review of The United States of Leland (2003) by Zane T — 15 Jan 2009
This movie is really depressing. Not one character in this movie is allowed one moment of happiness and not one actor tries to show some real pathos on the characters. It's all speeches about how bad it is being a teen of a famous novelist.
Boo-frickidy-woo! It's so sad to know that Hollywood still hasn't gotten it. Ordinary People was almost 30 years ago. We get it. The posh well to do WASP families can be just as dysfunctional as the rest of us.
Chris Klein is too old to be playing a high school kid. Jena Malone proves that Bastard Out of Carolina was a fluke. As for Ryan Gosling, this kid really needs a makeover by either Judd Apatow or the Farrelly Brothers.
I want to see Gosling have explosive diarrhea in a comedy or wiping semen through his hair.
