Review of The United States of Leland (2003) by Nasha C — 18 Aug 2009
I thought this was a really good movie, although really depressing. Ryan Gosling does an amazing job playing Leland. The movie really had a way of making you adore Leland. The whole time I wanted Leland to be innocent, but in the beginning he tells you he did it.
The movie had such a strong message about the imperfections of the human character. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has a dark side. Ryan's father wanted to kill Leland but resisted. Allen, on the other hand, could not resist.
The worst part is, you know Leland is guilty but you want to help him. Sadness is contagious and too much of it can push people over the edge. I think Leland wanted to free Ryan from his sadness. I don't see Leland as being a monster, I see him as someone who lost hope.
