Review of The Ugly Truth (2009) by Listya B — 15 Oct 2011
When is sexism not funny? The Ugly Truth exploits those qualities of both men and women into a story about attraction and sex. And it's not that bad either.
Katherine Heigl stars as Abby, a television producer who is not only failing in attracting viewers, she is also failing at relationships. She is utterly repulsed when she watches a popular tv show called "The Ugly Truth" where Mike Chadway talks about sex and the ignorance of woman, but not only is she forced to feature him on her network, but he might also be the answer to her relationship troubles. The sexist jokes and sex talk are about average, and when the movie does become promising it begins to loose steam. But what really holds this movie together are the performances. Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler make a great team and I highly doubt the movie would have been funnier with anyone else as their roles. They take jokes that could fall flat at any time and they make them very funny. This is a great comedic performance movie that doesn't do bad in the romance department either.
Robert Luketic does a pretty good job in directing this rom-com. And I noticed a few creative touches, like the continuous shot at the beginning. And the comedy is well captured, whether being flat material or not, I think it was directed pretty well. Most of the time this movie looks pretty average for a rom-com, but there are creative touches to create that tv network enviroment. Sets look pretty good and the cinematography looks well enough for its genre.
It's style may be average and its comedy may be done before, but the Ugly Truth isn't necessarily bad in its execution and the funny performances from Heigl and Butler are worth the time.
