Review of The Ugly (1997) by Charlene & — 25 Aug 2009

This one was a tough watch for me. The set up was similar to that of The Silence of the Lambs except it had an aura of both mystery and sadness. This was an interesting watch because it showed the path of the killer from the killer's shoes.

This guy had one messed up life from his childhood (his mother... *shudder) to the nowadays. The jumps between were very random but not to the point of confusion. Au contraire; it made me want to figure out even more as to what this guy's deal was.

Scott Reynolds made the movie look amazing. It looks like you've got an issue with the TV with the blue tint he gives off through most of it. He also has a good handle on suspense and his scene transitions are jaw dropping.

His style if full of zany angles, cuts and lighting but it somehow keeps the movie very real. Amazing job on his front. There's also the random supernatural bits and could-be dream moments that kept me studying.

It never fully tells you if these bits are to be believed or not. It had my head working on overtime so I'm going to go with the fact that they were necessary to the picture. Other than Simon and Dr.

Schumacher, the characters here are also pretty wacky and you never fully know what they're about. Paolo Rotondo evoked sympathy and respect from me. Considering he plays an instituionalized serial killer that's an amazing feat.

Good show. Rebecca Hobbs does her counter role to Rotono very well. Add to that some WTF moments (yes, on top of the whole story) a twist on the gore aspect (the blood is black), eeire bits, and a beautiful score and you get a major classic for the horror genre.

This one got to me good and I relished every micro-second. Hunt it down and see it.
