Review of The Ugly (1997) by Bryan B — 23 May 2010
The Ugly is a low-budget horror gem that is extremely difficult to find in the States. This New Zealand thriller reminded me of the very strange 1989 film Santa Sangre. In both films, we are presented with a serial killer and the slow unraveling into the psychology as to why they kill.
Some may disagree, but this film does remind me of Halloween in that, despite its very low budget, it manages some really good acting, a very believable and coherent storyline and some really horrific scenes.
I managed to find this film in my local Blockbuster and watched it with the lights off...and it scared the shit out of me. It is dark and brooding. The killer kills with a razor blade, which always freaks me out. It is a modern day Jack the Ripper flick crossed with a dash of the Exorcist.
If you are a horror fan, find this film and watch it. Is it the best horror film ever?....no. Is it scary? I dare you to watch it alone in the dark. When you finally unravel the mystery of the serial killer in that dark and dank insane asylum, I guarantee you will be looking over your shoulder to see if "The Ugly" is lurking in the dark.
Excellent, unappreciated, and truly inspired!
