Review of The Two Jakes (1990) by Paul B — 28 Aug 2009
Pure Nicholson!! He directs the film and is perfect again in this long-delayed sequel to Chinatown.
Harvey Keitel and the rest of the cast are also great.
After reading some of the other reviews of this film, I thought it might be disappointing; it was not.
I will admit that there is "a lot" going on in this film. Similar to Chinatown, if you don't really watch (and listen to)every minute of this movie you will not be rewarded with the full understanding of the main character's motives, thougths on himself, and what makes everything tick in the mad world of money, money, money. It is a deep look at human nature and what we will do for money and love.
The film is slightly downgraded because it can be a complicated, shifting movie with a little too much poetic, vague monologue .
If you have seen Chinatown or are going to see it, make sure you follow up with this sequel.
