Review of The TV Set (2007) by Robert S — 11 Oct 2007
I love the concept, and there are some stellar performances here, but on the whole it's nothing to watch again. What it does succeed in is launching a scathing satirical attack on the network television system.
Based on the real experiences of director Jake Kasdan and Producer Judd Apatow working on their short lived shows "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" together as well as countless failed pilots, it's a very real account of the struggles dealing with network executives.
To be fair, this isn't a mainstream film, and it isn't trying to be. This is Kasdan's pet project, and he made exactly the film he wanted to make. The results are blistering and funny, but not very accessible to those unfamiliar with the entertainment industry, or those familiar with Kasdan and Apatow's struggles.
If for nothing else, see it for Sigourney Weaver's performance.
