Exactly how it reads, you can't help but feel sorry for the protagonist seeing his dream slowly remolded into some typical formulaic show. Its almost close to a documentary in feel but it still has that movie sheen to keep it engaging and funny.
It could almost be a tv show itself, something of an alternate universe to Californication.
