Review of The Tuxedo (2002) by Dave A — 18 Feb 2010
For such a half baked premise, it could actually work as a movie, which is what I thought when I laughed at the preview (which I later discovered, had all the best parts). Then I saw the movie and wasn't appalled but disappointed.
Chan stars as a quick on his feet Manhattan cabbie who accidentally inherits a government-produced tuxedo, which is basically a giant 007 gadget with weaponry and kung fu fighting skills to match.
The movie had potential, but it feels clumsy from the get go, and the character development is middling. Thanks to a lackluster script that feels like it was written while the film was still shooting and the studios ordered reshoots to "tighten" it. Even Chan looks like he's getting tired and just goes along with it for the paycheck. The kung fu sequences are mildly disappointing, with choppy editing getting the best of them, and the comedy feels likes a mishmash of bad improvisation or bad casting (Jennifer Love Hewitt is not a comic actress). Avoid if you can.
