Review of The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) by Paul K — 08 Nov 2008
Maybe I'm missing some kind of tongue-in-cheek humor here, but to me this movie was based on a more than mildly offensive premise - that a fun, intelligent, animal-loving radio personality could, with no plausible back story and no 'laughing-at-your-foibles' kind of humor about it, believe that there wasn't a single man out there who could possibly find her attractive because she was short and a little chunky, as opposed to the ditsy and somewhat anorexic Uma Thurman character who couldn't even stand up to her abusive boyfriend.
Even that might have been acceptable if the movie had some kind of message about beauty being more than skin deep - but I never got any sense of apology for that offensive premise, so what could have been a charming, offbeat romantic comedy, remains odd and offensive.
Okay - I get it, another review casts it as a take-off on Cyrano DeBergerac - sorry, it's gotta be more transparent for the joke to work.
