Review of The Truman Show (1998) by Baurushan J — 14 Jan 2014

The story is about Truman Burbank played by Jim Carrey who doesn't know that his whole life is a 24-hour TV series. He lives in the land of Seahaven where he is captured by cameras to a global audience since a child.

All his friends and family are actors and actresses who also star except for Truman, now age 30 doesn't know he lives in a fictional world supposed to the real world since he was born and adopted by the TV network.

Truman wants to leave Seahaven but is constantly reminded of how beautiful the place is since the ratings will collapse if he does leave. This makes him more curious as he is desperate to leave the place and find out what is actually outside Seahaven since his friends and family keep on disappearing and appearing out of nowhere.

This comedy/drama/science-fiction gave us a clean, strong message on not just the social media commentary but also about how reality views TV life and how they view us. The whole concept of simulated reality has been done in a clean and original way thanks to writer Andrew Niccol who later worked on the underrated In Time.

The Truman Show gets a decent 10/10.
