Review of The Trouble with Harry (1955) by Patrick M — 20 Jan 2011
Many people who have not seen a lot of Alfred Hitchcock's films may not realize that they are quite funny at times. The subtle dark humor in films like Strangers on a Train and North by Northwest can sometimes be the most enjoyable parts of the films.
The Trouble with Harry is a comedy, albeit a dark one. The story is that a dead body is discovered in a small Vermont town and multiple people fear they are the killer. There are no truly laugh-out-loud moments of this movie, but the wittiness of the script and the subtlety of the humor do make this quite enjoyable. I especially love how nobody actually feels bad about Harry being dead.
Also a huge plus for this movie is the scenery. The beautiful autumn leaves are stunning in the 1955 color. I just love how this film paints a picture of a small Vermont town so well.
Hitchcock's made far better movies, but this is worth a watch if you're a fan of his.
