Review of The Trotsky (2010) by David E — 13 May 2010
A surprisingly good film. Good direction and acting, with a really strong script that refuses to pander. The film expects its audience to be versed in the basics of various historical social justice movements.
While this stubborn refusal to talk down will likely keep it from connecting with a large audience, those who paid any attention in high school (or maybe a little post secondary) will have no problem following and will find a lot to enjoy here.
It does get a little bogged down in its own speechifying in the third act, and the lighting is uniformly terrible throughout, this is a film that should be seen, and I really hope that it is.
