Review of The Trotsky (2010) by Jeremy L — 27 May 2010
A high-concept comedy with actually interesting things to say. A Montreal high school student who believes he is the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky decides to form a union at his high school, and fulfill his destiny as a revolutionary. Funny and intelligent social commentary on the education system and the greatest question about today's youth: boredom or apathy?
If you were one of those people who went through high school gritting your teeth because you felt powerless against an oppressive administration and apathetic teachers (Western Tech, anyone?), you will enjoy this film. If you are a resident of the city of Montreal, you will enjoy this film - Jacob Tierney and his cast and crew are natives who create an environment that very much captures not only what it is to be young, but to be a young Canadian in Montreal.
The film has it's problems, of course - I feel that Mr. Tierney sacrificed exploring some of the themes of the film in-depth for carrying along the relentless momentum - but I can't remember the last time I felt so genuinely roused and amused by a comedy. PLEASE go see this film.
