Review of The Tripper (2006) by Brandon M — 29 Apr 2008
What's worse than having a homicidal, axe-wielding manic roaming the woods in a bad Ronnie Reagan mask?
Bringing your drug-hating friend with a stalking psychotic ex to a hippie love-in organized by Paul Reubens.
Yes, there is a slasher loose, and he's rather non-discriminatory about who gets the axe, but the real issue addressed in this film is who NOT to take deep out into the woods for a drug-laden hippie-spree. Bottom line, all you hippie folks that still roam free the lands of Northern California in your tricked out hippie vans crammed full of hippie stereotypes: if you have a friend that was recently assaulted by her conservative boyfriend while she was candy-flippin' and now she has a bug against anything resembling a good time, LEAVE HER AT HOME. Nothing good will come of it. She killed the party long before Ronnie Reagan showed up.
And speakin' of Ron, it's now time for Stuart to "Rate the Slasher!" Personally, I love the idea of a rogue Ronnie Reagan rovin' and reapin' under tree and over hill. But, if that's your gimick, at least make him look like Ronald Reagan. Dude looked like Bruce Campbell from "Escape from L.A." There are better Reagan masks out there, people. I've seen'em. Run ya about $40. If you can afford to put Paul Reubens, Jason Mewes, Thomas Jane, and countless others into a film, you can spring for a decent cheap Reagan mask. The kill-lines were good, but random. With all of Reagan's years of public speaking, I'm sure there were a couple more doozies that could have been thrown in.
So, yeah. A fun slasher-flick. Lots of good stuff caught on film. For instance, Paul Reubens crawling into a porta-john and some naked dude chasin' a bunny.
But, all issue-laden friends and axe-weilding Campbell/Reagans aside: do not piss off the Lumberjack Leprechaun. All of this could have been avoided if he were allowed to chop down redwoods and gloat over his Lucky Charms . . .
