Review of The Triplets of Belleville (2003) by Bill C — 10 Sep 2010
Definitely enjoyable, but I think I was almost confused as my boys (4-5) as to the "quirky" (misleading word, but but it the closet word I can think of) nature of this film. After the opening song which is a take-of 1930's Disney-esque burlesque show.
The movie settles into a very low-low key story about a boy and his ?Grandmother?. Champion the boy is very hard to connect with in the beginning he starts out a shy boy and his grandmother tries to draw him out through music and eventually bicycling.
The film jumps forward and he is an accomplished cyclist who is always exhausted from training. The only point of access to the story is his puppy who grows up into an Obese hound. The movie sets some unique, imaginative and beautiful animation, but without a real solid point of access I really could form any connection to the characters in the movie.
