Review of The Triplets of Belleville (2003) by Ashin M — 24 Jul 2008
What a magical movie.
A silent, lonely, orphaned kid whose only interest in life is cycling and (cycling+french) is always gonna lead to Tour de France.
His caring grandma who wud do everything to see the kid happy and at the same time a pretty hard taskmaster.
His pet obese dog who only objective in life is to bark at passing train.
Take this trio for the central characters.
Add to it a dynamite-blasting, frog-eating music group of three old hags with A refrigerator; an old newspaper and a modern vacuum cleaner for their musical instruments.
And to make it a little more interesting introduce some black rectangular looking vicious French mafia with their heinous money-making plot.
By the way this is an animation movie which is almost silent and has its fair share of sex and violence !!!
U wud b tempted to ask how much weirder can it get? and yet Chomet manages to get something wonderful out of this absolutely chaotic mix which simply does not care for categories or stereotypes !!!
So let me conclude with these lines abt this incredible movie which I read in some other review by some really knowledgeable movie critic "Most animated features have an almost grotesque desire to be loved. This one doesn't seem to care." thts such a wonderful way of putting things into perspective but the point I believe he missed is----And yet at the end of the movie you'll fall for it, thats the reason its so special !!!
