Review of The Trip (2011) by Amilcar A — 18 Jun 2011
Imagine a trip with two interesting characters. Said characters are also the most annoying people you've met. They are also funny & at times sensitive. One is full of himself and the other one is not. They are driving around northern England trying sophisticated restaurants.
Well this about summarizes the Trip. It's a movie that would be a monologue if it was up to Steve Coogan. He wants you to realize he's cool, hip smart and important. Rob Brydon in the meantime is just there to tag along but is remarkably funny, charming and lot more grounded.
As they travel around the North, they find themselves talking a lot but not about anything meaningful. They spend hours doing impressions and singing songs as a bad duet.
You can't really tell if they like each other genuinely. Sometimes they act as old friends and at times more like acquaintances or coworkers.
Ultimately the Trip is a really funny and smart movie. It's a the kind of comedy where you will laugh with your brain and not your gut. It's smart, quirky and remarkably well managed.
At times it drags a bit and could perhaps be a few minutes shorter towards the end. Overall however it's a great show and highly recommended.
