Review of The Trip (2011) by Luke R — 23 Jul 2011
In watching the whole BBC miniseries of the same name from which the movie was culled, it wouldn't be inaccurate to label this "British Men (well, a British Man and a Welsh Man) of a Certain Age".
Little bits of despair color the sometimes light, sometimes confrontational sparring between the brooding, lovesick Coogan and the more garrulous, happy-go-lucky Brydon. It's a subtly cathartic exploration for anyone who has found themselves in unavoidably close quarters with others over an extended period of time, even more so for those who have gone through that kind of situation while at an emotional crossroads.
In such times, we become aware of and are forced to deal with flaws and imperfections that we may have not been cognizant of with our friends before, and try to reconcile them on the fly. Watching two inherently funny men work these things out is frequently delightful and unassumingly insightful.
