Review of The Trip (2011) by Kyle G — 01 Jan 2012
A love of food and travel crossed with an even deeper love of rhetoric, comedy, friendship. Chaotic back-and-forth impressions (Michael Caine, Al Pacino, Connery as Bond, etc.) interspersed with steadily tragic digressions (reuniting foils, a la Reichardt's OLD JOY, and some sadly interrupted romance).
It's uneven at times, like when Winterbottom leans a little too hard on all a single sheer element, levity/gravity/etc., but it's always honest and legitimate, and there's a surprising, undeniable momentum in even the least effective scenes.
