Review of The Trip (2011) by Rainer K — 28 Mar 2012
Steve Coogan and Bob Brydon go through a mid-life crisis on their trip through Northern England.
For one week Steve called his friend Bob (who he actually doesn't like that much) to join him on a restaurant tour his girlfriend refused to go with.
Part reality-TV, part Sideways The Trip is a thoroughly enjoyable and funny ride benefitting from a sparkling chemistry of their leads and hilarious dark humour.
Memorable as well are the many impressions they do throughout the film, especially Brydon who does an amazing Anthony Hopkins and an over-the-top Al Pacino. These impressions go along with a uncountable number of cultural references that make it a heyday for cinephiles.
What I like so much about British comedy is the way they don't try to force their jokes so much but depend on situations and relations to let them develop. And even if you're not a big fan of it The Trip will make you at least hungry.
