Review of The Tribe (2016) by Don B — 24 Apr 2015
Plemya (The Tribe) Director Myroslav Slaboshpitsky, Ukraine, 2014. A horrifically violent film which depicts the failure of institutionalizing deaf and mute people rather than normalizing their lives. There are some brilliant raw scenes such as a young girl's abortion and a camera shot where a hoodlum descends a hillside in the night to attack one of the adult ring leaders.
The film suffers from poor pacing, acting and cinematographic redundancy. Just as society tends to stereotype people who do not have all sensory abilities, the director asks the audience to generalize his characters without any background development and understanding.
It is not enough. Pass this film by.
