Review of The Tribe (2016) by Peter F — 21 Jun 2015
A 2-hour plus movie featuring no spoken dialogue is inevitably going to come off as unabashedly experimental (or gimmicky), but The Tribe manages to be riveting. Slaboshpitsky keeps the film's story simple, and it actually has a fairly standard crime film narrative to it.
Of course, it's the fact that this film centers on deaf people that makes it fascinating, especially as it uses this to really toy with our expectations. Slaboshpitsky gets the most out of his young actors who are able to convey themselves through actions and mannerisms rather than words, even if we don't exactly find empathy with them.
Sparked with sex, violence, and a unwaveringly disturbing tone, The Tribe can be difficult to watch, but with its impressive long-takes and subversive cinematic send-ups, it's a bit easier to be impressed with.
