Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Brandon V — 11 Mar 2016
Sure, it may be pretentious at times, but Terrence Malick creates some of the most gorgeous and unforgettable cinematography I've ever seen. There's a lot happening here, and I'd be lying if I said I understand everything that Malick is trying to communicate, but I understand enough to guide me along this journey through the human experience.
This is a movie with a kind of unparalleled appreciation for life in all of it's perfections and imperfections. I just wish it was a bit more coherent. Malick crafted a beautiful masterpiece with The Thin Red Line.
It had the same visual ques and the same poetic tone, but it had a much more prominent, coherent narrative. But if anyone actually believes that Terrence Malick didn't do exactly what he wanted to do with this film than you're dead wrong.
This is exactly what he saw and felt.
