Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Jonathan P — 22 Jun 2013
Beautifully shot yet flawed. The Tree of Life is typical Terrence Malick but it seems that Malick wanted to hearken back to 2001 A Space Odyssey which also wastes a half hour of reel as it shoots the beauty of space.
The Tree of Life does the same with an absurd array of psychedelic frames and a shortened history of evolution. The Tree of Life does have an interesting story amid all of Malik's unwillingness to tell it without interruption and Brad Pitt gives a grand performance but Malik sabotages his own film with his usual habit of overdoing everything.
