Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Brandon W — 01 Jun 2015
With The Tree of Life, I have heard so much about this film about people loving it as a perfect masterpiece that can also be as one of the best films some people have seen, and other people hate it as a pretentious, boring, confusing, and nonsensical movie that is very overrated.
Brad Jones hated it too and gives off a hilarious review that makes me wonder about what's up with this film, or about the way Terrence Malick does his style. So I finally got a chance to watch Terrence Malick's The Tree Of Life which I felt like it's going to be a challenge to be invested in this film, and it was for a bit, but it's a great movie that is a bit overrated in my opinion.
The effects looks gorgeous in this and you can just look at it for a long time and still be majestified at it. I don't know how Terrence Malick does his style, but it's something that I will always remember.
I don't know the deeper meanings as my mind doesn't go that far and is more to the qualities of the film, but all I got for the plot, is the evolution of life, childhood, and the way that a parent can change a kid, which I guess is fine, but I actually am glad to see that it's not spoon feeding you and is showing you the "plot".
The cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki is really good, and the acting by Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and the kids are really great in this. I do think that it is pretentious, the dinosaur scene was really not needed, and if it was not in there, it would've been fine as it is.
There were some scenes that were getting boring and I was waiting for either the next scene, or something to happen. I do know why people hate or love The Tree of Life, but for me, it's not a masterpiece, nor a terrible film, and I was actually invested in the film a bit that I'm surprised that I actually enjoyed this.
