Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Cameron W — 29 May 2013
This is no doubt the greatest film I have ever seen. Malick's broad vision on human nature and existence is paralleled only by Stanley Kubrick; he knows perfectly well how to place humanity peacefully and harmoniously upon nature's beautiful landscape.
Malick makes the films I would like to make, films that display the human struggle for meaning, yet without waivering from the beauty that lies within that struggle; the beauty that we even have this struggle.
And with The Tree of Life he depicts our struggle to find meaning by understanding our creator, and how we think that this alone can give us happiness and meaning. I think that Malick agrees with that notion, I don't personally agree with it, but that doesn't matter when it comes to my critique of the film, because this film is stunning to look at, emotionally riveting, and intellectually challenging, yet retains Malick's poetic gracefulness that never ceases to amaze me.
