Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Nick H — 26 Feb 2008
A tremenous film from some of cinema's old masters. John Huston creates a truly astonishing and frightening adventure. three men with nothing but hopes of fortune head into a desolate part of Mexico to prospect for gold.
it isn't long before they find it and are bringing in thousands of dollars worth. this is when the gold becomes more of a curse than a fortune when paranoia and greed strike. this is a frightening, yet masterful examination of the dark side of man's soul, a side driven by disturbing thoughts and motivations.
Humphrey Bogart, who I am new to, gives a downright amazing performance as the crazed Fred C. Dobbs. also brilliant are Walter Huston and Tim Holt, playing a wise, former prospector and a man desperate for work.
this is an amazing character film with wonderful direction, writing, and acting. an American classic.
