Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Colin F — 01 Jun 2008
Golden oldie. A nice portray what gold makes people do. Already Macchiavelli said that a person is more likely to forgive you killing his father than stealing his property. On the sierra, Humpy starts to get paranoid bit by bit, and this has its consequences.
However, I don't think this is as much of a Humpy's movie, than Walter Huston's (who is the director's father). He's a truly funny character to watch, and he represents the sound of reason in the heat of the sierra.
He totally bogarts this movie from Humpy. He's also ahead of his times, or even these times. When the prospectors decide that they have gathered enough gold, Walter says that they have to clean up after them and show respect to the nature.
And this was in '48.
