Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Mike H — 30 Nov 2008
One of the better films to come out of 1940s Hollywood. One of Bogart's best performances. One of Huston's best screenplays. His pessimism is definitely a force in the story, though not nearly as much so as his supporting role in Chinatown or a later screenplay, Fat City.
Photography was excellent, but the direction was a little on the safe side; this was during an era when safe was a requirement, so it isn't necessarily the director's fault, but it does prevent the film from achieving perfection.
