Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Drew T — 18 Feb 2009
Classic, gritty adventure story with a little more to offer than the conventional elements: three American men--two younger desperate drifters and one old, colorful prospector--journey to the Sierra Madre Mountains in the wilds of Mexico in search of gold.
..and find more than they bargained for. Brilliant movie, with a unsympathetic Bogart working effectively well; tense, humorous direction by John Huston; and a timeless moral about greed and the thrill of the journey.
Walter Huston, John's father, steals the show as the prospector. This movie deservedly won three Oscars--and it should have won four, the final for Best Picture. Based on the mysterious B. Traven's excellent novel.
