Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Jeff L — 18 Jan 2011
This movie is the predecessor of flicks such as '21', 'Two For the Money' and 'Boiler Room'. The characters receive a windfall (treasure, gambling or casino money, insider trading) but will lose all of it at the end, which in turn will teach them the lesson that they can't get anything for free in life.
Bogart is splendid as a gold prospector, whose desperation to survive takes him to Mexico, where he strikes gold. But his suspicions get the better of him and be hecome a green-eyed monster, not trusting his partners and himself.
His downfall is inevitable and sad.
