Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Ryan V — 17 Apr 2013
Two American hoboes (Humphrey Bogart & Tim Holt) partner up with a grizzled old prospector (Walter Huston) and venture out into the Mexican wilderness with dreams of gold. They strike it rich, but the frazzled trio must contend with bandits, interlopers, and their own greed.
Director John Huston shoots this gritty morality tale with his characteristic talents for economy and visceral storytelling. Walter Huston deserved his Oscar for a terrific performance, but Bogie's descent into insane avarice is equally compelling.
This film is one of the greats and the journey of a movie-lover cannot be complete without seeing it.
