Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Brent G — 27 Jan 2008
There's something about space in Treasure of the Sierra Madre that takes over in a strong way, as if the Western goldmines they're climbing unfold literally and metaphorically as each character's fate is secured by their relationhips with each other and the choices they make.
Most of the movie takes place out in the Western wild. It's almost like watching a single set movie. In Treasure, space is a metaphor for one's life span, and what we do with it.
The performances are incredible. The craft of acting. A very thoughtful, ruggedly alive movie.
Similar to Hitchcock's Life Boat (1944) in terms of having a concentrated set and the suspense of not knowing the real agenda of the characters.
