Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Matt C — 10 Jul 2010
One of the finest westerns I've ever seen. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is about two down-on-their-luck fellas who come across a prospector at a cheap shelter for the homeless who's gloating about the wonders of his trade.
The fellas decide to embark on a gold-digging expedition with the wily prospector and truly have no idea what they're getting into. More-so part morality tale, psychological thriller, and western than strictly the latter, the film does a phenomenal job of showing the strains of greed on even the best of men.
The psychological breakdown of Bogey's character is particularly superb. Bogart and Walter Huston steal the show, both giving extraordinary performances. And the craftsmanship of director and writer John Huston is both brilliant and beautifully executed.
A must-see classic.
