Bogart is masterful in his portrayal of a paranoid man who lets greed get the best of him. Besides being a classic which other films have drawn upon (City Slickers, There Will Be Blood), the movie presents an important moral message: that hard work and honesty may not bring you huge treasures in life, but in the end your experiences will lead you to realize happiness doesn't have to be bought.
