Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Tobias E — 22 Apr 2009
You could probably hold a lot of things against this film these days. Most significant point of criticism has to be the terribly naive plot. Watching this or any old Transformers episodes clearly shows how screen writers really didn't take kids seriously in those days.
Especially any sort of realistic continuity must have been something, they considered, that happened to other plots only. This one doesn't follow the rules of any universe, real or ficticious, but rather those of story, e.
G. heroes *always* arrive in the nick of time. The characters are also very one-dimensional - as they've always been. And by today's standards some moments, like Optimus Prime's "You got the touch" solo, are extremely cheesy.
It all makes me wonder why I actually do like the film. I guess, it has become a classic. Cheesy or not these are some of the most memorable moments in Transformers. It has, after all, the mother of all showdowns.
The action is a lot more gritty and dynamic compared to the series. Lastly, the artwork is still pretty cool with lots of detail. They also have an impressive lineup of voice actors. Shame they couldn't hold on to Nimoy for the fourth season.
