Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Luke P — 19 May 2009
The big screen debut of those robots in disguise (more than meets the eye!) is classic Tranformers, in that its beautifully animated (in it's cheap and endearing way), great fun to watch but completely incomprehensible.
If your able to follow the multitude of characters, plot twists and location changes throughout this film then you're a better man than I. This film also requires of it's a viewer a pretty indepth knowledge of the world of the Transformers, so if you don't know your Autobots from Dinobots, or your Decepticons from your Constructicons, then you will no doubt get lost watching this.
That being said, it is a highly entertaining way to spend 94 minutes, a sensory overload of noise and colour that come the final credits you'll be hardpressed to recollect in any detail. Still, got to love a film that kills off most of it's big names (including Optimus Prime!), and has the cheesiest soundtrack ever heard.
Plus, it's the last film of Mr Orson Welles playing, quite aptly, a planet that eats everything in it's path.
