Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Evan A — 05 Jul 2011
I wasn't around in the 1980s, but when I heard of this movie back in 2007, I really wanted to see it. So I did. And I liked it. A lot. The first thing that impressed me was the famous voice cast. They featured familiar faces like Eric Idle, Robert Stack, and even Orson Welles.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Welles as the voice of Unicron, because now I can say I liked a movie he was in. No more Citizen Kane for me! What's more, this was his last role before he passed on, and what a way to go! Next thing I should mention is the soundtrack.
I think Stan Bush and Spectre General are better music choices for Transformers than Linkin Park or Smashing Pumpkins, and I think you'll agree. But all that good stuff aside, was it a good movie? Indeed it was.
The action was riveting and the storyline was decent. I should also mention the nerve the writers had, killing off most of the Transformers, especially Optimus. That one death scene sparked a lot of controversy, which makes it all the more gutsy for these guys to kill him off.
Admirable. So, overall, I like this movie, and I think it's been judged too harshly, but that may just be because I'm a Transformers fan, unlike the critics that bashed this movie. If you're like them, don't watch it.
If you're like me, please do.
