Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Alexander R — 07 Oct 2011
How bad is it when three multi-million dollar films made in the 2000s and 2010s don't hold a candle to a lesser know animated film from 1986.
Based on the original G1 TV series in the 80s, this movie is extremely cheesy, but it's also really awesome. It's a damn shame that Michael Bay couldn't take any tips from this, because clearly he doesn't understand the definition of awesome.
This movie is famous for a lot of things, it's famous for killing off most of the characters that the original fans grew up with and it's famous for being the very last film Orson Welles died. Despite him not giving a crap about Transformers, his voice for Unicron is creepy. The rest of the voice acting is good and the animation looks great in some scenes, but just like the shows animation in others. Another key factor is the music, featuring a cool score from Vince DiCola, a bunch of heavy metal (which is what the live-action movies needed instead of Linkin Park) and of course "The Touch" from Stan Bush.
If I had any complaints, there are moments where I don't know what's going on story wise, because the movie moves at a fast pace. I also wish that Optimus Prime was the main character of the story instead of Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. It also kinda bugs me that it's basically a hour and a half long toy commercial, but it doesn't 100% bother me knowing that the Michael Bay movies look even more like feature length commercials then this movie does.
It's not perfect, but it's the only Transformers movie worth watching. If you want some cheesy, awesome fun from the 80s check it out, especially if you want to see a good Transformers movie!
