Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Troy F — 05 Jul 2014
If you thought Bay's take on the series was silly and overblown with action, Transformers: The Movie really isn't that far off, it's really a lot of that, except it's plot isn't convoluted.
It's simple, short and sweet in a film that isn't two and a half flippin' hours! The film is a non-stop war between Autobots and Deceptions filled with action chaos, cheesy dialogue, and a real strange blend of music.
The music is really what struck odd to me. There's some score in here which rocks as far as 80's go, but also a lot of cheesy band tunes from the era. On the one hand, some of them give off a cheesy but fun charm to the film, while at other times, they're a little unfitting, and date the film badly.
Not a bad thing really, just means this film will never really carry over to the new generation as well, but if you can soak your mind into the space age decade of the 80's, it's pretty rad. Though it's full of action, it isn't always exciting and does seem awfully rapid to the point that it tires itself near the end, and the animation is a little sloppy at times, but it's still a cool looking relic of a film.
