Review of The Train (1964) by Michael T — 04 Feb 2012
Before he filmed his last masterpiece (SECONDS), Frankenheimer filmed this very intense tale set in WWII. The Allies have landed in Normandy, Mussolini has collapsed, and the Red Army is chasing the Nazis out of Russia.
As the Axis implodes inward, the Germans prepare to abandon Paris. But a Nazi colonel (played by Paul Scofield) wants to take a trainload of precious art treasures out of the museums of France and with him back to Germany.
Its up to a French resistance leader played by Burt Lancaster to stop him. Burt doesn't sound French but itherwise, its one of his standout roles. For an actor approaching his fifties, Burt was in great shape and performed all his own stunts.
