Review of The Tracey Fragments (2007) by Scott P — 03 Nov 2008
I'm not saying everyone will love this. Casual movie-goers will not. The multi- screen effect can be too much, since this is the first film to actually utilize it for the whole film!
The Tracey Fragments is a uniquely dark and interesting look at an adolescent girl who leaves home in search for her lost brother. The story isn't really about her brother, but about Tracey's experience in the process and her story is told by excerpts from her memory and imagination. The whole movie is non-linear. There's moments where the film seems gimmicky, like the middle portion where a fake title comes across the screen as Tracey imagines that she's a movie star. Its a little silly, overall I was more intrigued by the writing. The film captures the dream-like qualities of the narrative using multiple screens. Ellen Page is excellent in the film and gives a good performance. The direction by Bruce McDonald is solid. And excellent work by editors Jeremy Munce and Gareth C. Scales. If you want something a little more on the experimental side of film, I suggest you take a look, but trust me this is completely an EXPERIMENTAL film. Don't hate me if you do not like it.
