Review of The Tracey Fragments (2007) by Giorgos V — 15 Jun 2009
Cinematic masturbation, thy name is "The Tracey Fragments". More an exercise in... annoyance (?) than an actual narrative, the "novelty" of the split-screen technique wears off with well over an hour left in the film.
What's left is something only Tony Scott would enjoy. Ellen Page makes the best of the often-ridiculous dialogue and situations she's saddled with (no, that's not a reference to the film's inexplicable horse motif), but McDonald makes the whole thing seem like a masochistic experience for everyone involved.
In the rare instances where he lets the frame linger for more than two seconds and allows the plot to breath, "The Tracey Fragments" can actually be - gasp - interesting, but flash is the order of the day.
Shame.
