Review of The Toxic Avenger (1984) by Jonathan A — 23 May 2009
Troma's flagship film about a wimp who becomes a superhero after a freak accident with some toxic waste. More of a parody than a straight-up horror film. Although the plot is severely uneven (I must have been watching an edited version), gorehounds will be pleased as well as anyone interested in wacky, screwball comedy.
Only problem is at times the film got a little too silly for my tastes, and downright offensive in places. Nevertheless, one can appreciate it for the creativity the filmmakers put into it, in spite of being a zero-budget film.
I still can't believe this is considered a cult classic! Perhaps deservedly so.
