Review of The Toxic Avenger (1984) by Chad H — 05 Aug 2013
What a movie. This one is at times completely over the top full of those cliches of the 80's and little moments that really come together to make this one work. It starts off at a health club where we see a young nerd named Melvin who is picked on and teased horribly by all the popular kids.
He is extremely exaggerated though, but interesting enough to sympathize with him. What the kids do to him brings all back to being bullied at a younger age and this is that classic revenge tale taken to extreme heights.
In fact all the characters in this movie are completely over exaggerated, but its satisfying and entertaining as all hell. This movie however is pretty gruesome at times, and Troma pulls no punches, they kill a dog, beat up and old lady, and even run over children for sport.
The story does drag on a bit in the beginning, but when the monster comes to form is when the movie really picks up. I will say this the ways that Toxie kills is very interesting and over the top. Its a complete gore fest.
This is a very original movie and is a pretty good cult movie. I definitely recommend this to those cult film fans, give this one a watch.
