Review of The Town (2010) by Francisco R — 20 Jan 2013
Let's cut to the chase, the town isn't your basic cops and robbers story it's got drama, action and subtle doses of humour. Affleck gives a great performance in his main character role and as director which is particularly evident within the movies location.
The town is all about Boston and how it ties to the story so well in terms of the desire to leave (obviously with a woman) but the honour and the pride keeping people tied to the city. The film through action and setting creates some great moments such as a mid movie car chase through narrow streets and gives the feel of a computer game, GTA Boston! For me it's let down on a whole by it's failure to build characters story beyond the main core, affleck as doug and Claire who share depressing dates as a sunny day holds bad memories for Claire which pays real relevance late in the movie.
Then the crazy best mate crew member who admits no matter what happens his only judgment will take place on the streets not in the court room, and his sister who at one point in the movie appears to completely disregard how a decision she makes will effect her brother only her past relationship with doug.
Then we have another two crew members that we find out little about and the flower shop puppeteers in the movie to reveal a little depth on the main man dougs past and serve little to no other purpose.
That said good story, action scenes brilliantly done with memorable moments especially the crews masks and disguises which make for some comedy as well as creating menace.
