Review of The Town (2010) by Cheyne L — 24 May 2013
Who would have thought the best heist film in years, maybe ever, would come from Ben Affleck, obviously an underrated talent that with the right source material can weave a powerhouse action film with the best of them .
. this is the best heist film I have ever seen, with charged action sequences balanced with heart and characterization to spare .. the conflicted Doug, keeping family ties and traditions of loyalty all while developing a new sense of appreciation for the little pleasures of life, Affleck paints a compelling portrait of an intelligent crook turning good .
. the well cast and well defined supporting characters are justified with top-notch acting and the dramatics in their interactions are fully realized .. every little sprocket in the swiss like precision of 'the town' is necessary, and considering the complexity of this film, the ability to stray away from the superfluous is quite an achievement .
. 'the town' makes the heist genre feel fresh again, the typical nature of the plot pushed aside by perfect performances all around and gripping action that has surprising momentum even though it's not necessarily anything new .
