Review of The Town (2010) by Billy H — 04 Jan 2014
Ben Affleck walks around "The Town," as if it owes him something. A plausible bank robber who just wants to make an easy living, Affleck's character Doug finds one of his biggest robberies almost ruined by his maniacal friend, Jem (Renner), who takes a woman (Hall) hostage during the crime.
Doug allows her to go free, and to make sure she doesn't spill the beans to the feds, he "bumps into" her a few days later at a laundromat, no unmasked, and begins a relationship with her.
How she doesn't get his repetitive hints at being a criminal, I don't know, but perhaps it's acceptable that she doesn't; "The Town" celebrates the cunning of Doug and his criminal friends, as a near-stupid group of FBI agents bumbles around after them, always one step behind.
The film has a lot of laughs and a lot of thrills, and even some genuine emotion. Though Affleck had a more fully realized film with "Argo" (which also didn't have the problem of inconsistent Boston accents), he definitely made a good one with "The Town".
Renner's performance and cameos by Pete Postlethwaite and Chris Cooper are the highlights, as well as the awesome masks.
